how much ice do i need?

We get this question a lot and the answer is, it depends!

We think it's generally better to be over prepared than the alternative.

There are 3 main things to consider:

the weather

We can't predict the weather, but if it's hot, the ice will melt faster than a cooler day. In addition, ice kept in an air conditioned space is going to last longer than ice kept outside. During the summer, we suggest being prepared with an extra bag or two.

The use

Will the ice be used in drinks, or kept in a cooler? For ice in drinks, we suggest

2 pounds per person.

For ice in containers, we suggest

1 pound of ice per 1 quart.

Need to fill a 40 quart cooler? A 40 lb bag should work for your needs. Keep in mind how much space the other items in your cooler will take.

1 gallon = 4 quarts = 4 pounds of ice

Have a 10 gallon container? You will need roughly 40 pounds of ice to fill it.

the time

Ice melts over time and if you need to keep things cool for more than several hours, consider additional bags to keep things fresh. Also, if a cooler is opened frequently it will melt faster than a cooler that is barely opened.

Taking these 3 factors in to consideration, you should be able to find a rough estimate of how much ice you need!
